How to Back Up Instagram Chats (Desktop & Mobile)

Unlike similar apps, Instagram does not allow you to back up the chats, images, and other content you’ve shared on the platform.

There’s no shortcut for the chat backup, but you can download all your data offline and then manually find your messages.

So, if you’re a regular Instagram user and don’t want to lose your chat, here’s how to back up all your chats.

1. Back up Instagram Chats from the Web

If you use Instagram’s web version for chats, here’s what you need to do to download your data.

1. Launch Instagram from your favorite web browser and sign in to your account.

2. Once signed in, click the More button at the bottom left corner.

3. On the menu that appears, select Your Activity.

4. On the Your Activity screen, click Download your information.

5. On the right side, click the Continue button.

6. On the Download your Information prompt, click Download or transfer information.

7. On the How much information do you want screen, click Some of your information.

8. Next, select Messages and click Next.

9. Click the Download to Device option to download your Instagram chat.

10. Now, you will be asked to select the Date range, download format, media quality, etc. Select everything you need and click Create Files.

You will get an email whenever your file is available to download.

2. Back up Instagram Chats on Mobile

The steps to download Instagram data on mobile apps are slightly different. Here’s what you need to do.

1. Open Instagram and reach to your profile page. Next, tap the Hamburger menu at the top right corner.

2. On the Settings and Activity screen, tap Accounts Center.

3. Scroll to the Account Settings and tap Your information and permissions.

4. Next, click Download your information.

5. On the Download your information prompt, tap Download or transfer information.

6. On the How much information do you want? screen, tap Some of your information.

7. Select Messages and tap Next.

8. Next, tap on Download to device.

9. On the Create files to download prompt, set everything as needed and tap Create files.
