A mixed-team golf event will be introduced at the Los Angeles Olympic Games, following approval from the International Olympic Committee’s executive board.
The competition will feature a 36-hole format, with two 18-hole rounds: foursomes and fourball. Each country is allowed to enter a maximum of one team, consisting of one male and one female athlete from the individual men’s and women’s events at the Games.
The event will be held between the men’s and women’s competitions at the Riviera Country Club.
Golf made its Olympic return at the 2016 Rio Games after more than a century’s absence, and LA 2028 will host the first team competition since the 1904 St. Louis Games.
Antony Scanlon, Executive Director of the International Golf Federation, expressed excitement about the new format, stating: “We’re thrilled to bring more attention to our sport with this addition. The athletes have shown great enthusiasm for the chance to play alongside their compatriots, and we look forward to seeing them compete together in Los Angeles.”
Team GB’s Justin Rose won the gold in the men’s individual event in Rio, while Tommy Fleetwood secured the silver medal at the 2024 Paris Games.
Golf is among six sports—along with archery, athletics (4x100m mixed relay), gymnastics, rowing coastal beach sprint, and table tennis—that will feature mixed-gender events at LA 2028.
