LeBron James, one of the most influential figures in modern sports, has made history once again—this time in the world of toys.
Mattel has unveiled a new Ken doll modeled after the NBA superstar, marking the first time a professional male athlete has been honored in this way.
“We’re excited to introduce fans to a new version of Ken,” said Krista Berger, Mattel’s Senior Vice President of Barbie. She emphasized that the doll celebrates “LeBron as a role model,” praising his cultural influence and his commitment to inspiring the next generation.
The doll mirrors James’ signature pre-game fashion, standing an inch taller than the standard Ken to reflect his real-life height of 6’9″. Instead of sporting his basketball uniform, the figure is dressed in a varsity jacket featuring his initials “LJ,” a crown patch, his iconic number 23, and a bold “LeBron” across the back. The phrase “Just a kid from Akron”—a nod to his hometown—is also proudly displayed.
Beneath the jacket, the doll wears a shirt reading “We Are Family,” referencing the mission of the LeBron James Family Foundation. Accessories include a basketball, headphones, and sneakers, capturing both his athletic and cultural style.
In a promotional video, James sees the doll for the first time and reacts with enthusiasm: “Oh, he dope! That’s so cool!” he says, laughing as he checks out the miniature version of himself. Jokingly, he adds, “Might have to do a little lifting—legs are looking skinny.”
The release marks a milestone for the Barbie brand, which has been working to increase diversity and representation in its dolls. While Barbie has previously celebrated prominent female athletes like Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka, and Megan Rapinoe, LeBron is the first male athlete—and the first male figure outside of entertainment—to be featured.
The announcement also comes at a complex time for Mattel, which faces financial challenges amid escalating U.S.-China trade tensions. With nearly 40% of its production based in China, the company has expressed concern over rising tariffs. President Donald Trump recently announced an increase in tariffs on Chinese imports to 125%, while China retaliated with tariffs of 84% on U.S. goods. Mattel warned that ongoing trade disputes could lead to higher prices and supply chain adjustments.
Despite the broader economic uncertainty, LeBron’s Ken doll is a major cultural moment. For James, whose career includes four NBA championships, two Olympic gold medals, and the all-time NBA scoring record, this honor is about more than sports.
“It’s an opportunity to recognize the powerful impact of role models who instill confidence, inspire dreams, and show kids that they, too, can achieve greatness,” he said.
